Since its founding in 2014, Anseye Pou Ayiti (APA) and its network of educators, community leaders and students have maintained an unwavering commitment to decolonize education in Haiti. APA's mission is deeply rooted in Haiti's rich history of self-determination. The 1804 Haitian Revolution, which culminated in the establishment of the world's first Black Republic, serves as a powerful reminder of the power of unity and collective action for liberation. However, in 2024 Haiti's education system remains one of the strongest remnants of the nation’s colonial past, often undermining these cultural assets, perpetuating fragmentation and inequality.

The APA movement is about taking full ownership of our power as Haitians through collective action. For over 10 years, APA has been working with local civic leaders to equip generations of Haitians with the skills, mindsets and knowledge to achieve their full potential. The APA movement has equipped hundreds of educators and community leaders across various regions in Haiti. Through its fellowship programs and community initiatives, APA has directly impacted the lives of over 21,000 students, aiming to bridge educational inequities and foster sustainable development.

Addressing today’s challenges

In the midst of Haiti's numerous present-day challenges, including political instability, economic hardships, and natural disasters, APA's mission has remained steadfast. The organization's efforts are more critical than ever, as Haiti continues to grapple with a fragmented education system that often fails to meet the needs of a large majority of its population. APA believes in the power of a strong, equitable education system to build a brighter future for all Haitians. Our work is framed within the broader context of Haiti's ongoing struggle for justice and equality, making it clear that education is not just a tool for personal advancement, but a vital component of national development. 

CEO and Co-Founder, Nedgine Paul Deroly states in a recent letter to supporters regarding Haiti’s recent challenges: "Anseye Pou Ayiti has always believed in and invested in collective leadership. Now more than ever, we need collective action among all those who believe in mighty Haiti. Among all those who know that while the problems are many, the solutions are possible." 

Through partnerships with local and international stakeholders and the Haitian Ministry of Education, APA continues to develop sustainable solutions that transform communities and build a stronger Haiti from within. With the support of these partnerships and collaboration with local schools and community leaders, APA continues to innovate and expand its impact. 

APA's new documentary

To mark its 10th anniversary, APA has released a documentary that sheds light on its impact over the past decade. The film showcases the voices of the students, educators, civic leaders, and communities that have been transformed through APA’s innovative initiatives. It underscores the importance of investing in human capital as a cornerstone for Haiti’s long-term development. 

Looking ahead

As APA moves into its second decade, the organization remains committed to its vision of an equitable and inclusive education system for all Haitian children. Over the next phase of its journey, APA sets its sights on influencing nationwide system change rooted in the organization’s core learnings and impact. By 2025, APA plans to amplify its networks of collaboration and equip 50,000 Haitian civic leaders for the four million children of Haiti.

Anseye Pou Ayiti’s 10th anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but a call to action for continued support and collaboration in APA’s mission and for Haiti’s future. By investing in education and empowering local communities, APA is laying the foundation for what can become a blueprint for decolonizing education, engaging communities and securing true liberation in Latin America and the Caribbean—and across the globe.
