We’re thrilled to welcome Teach For All’s 58th partner, Teach the Nation, to the global network. Led by CEO David Oliphant, Teach the Nation is developing a movement of leaders who will expand educational opportunity for all children in South Africa irrespective of their socioeconomic background.

South Africa has one of the highest levels of inequality in the world, with the richest 10% of the population holding more than 70% of net wealth compared to the poorest 60% who hold only 7%, according to the World Bank. These inequities are mirrored in the education system such that a child’s experience of education in South Africa still very much depends on where they were born, their family’s wealth, and the color of their skin. A recent report by Amnesty International found that in terms of outcomes South Africa has one of the most unequal school systems in the world where, of every 100 children that start school, 50-60 will make it to their final year of secondary school, 40-50 will pass their final exams, and only 14 will go to university. South Africa’s future depends on its ability to change the inequity in the educational landscape and provide opportunities for all children.

Teach the Nation is committed to addressing this need through its approach to developing a group of leaders committed to challenging education inequity. In 2021, Teach the Nation plans to place its inaugural cohort of 100 teachers (fellows) in underserved schools in the Western Cape region. In line with their goal of preparing students for an evolving world by supporting critical skills instruction that helps young leaders solve future challenges, Teach the Nation will focus on recruiting fellows with experience in STEM subjects, business entrepreneurship, and other learning outcomes that develop professional and emotional resilience. Every fellow will be also assigned an individual coach skilled in inclusive education pedagogy to serve as a professional and personal mentor. The coaches will help to prepare the fellows specifically for the requirements of teaching in underserved communities based on Teach the Nation’s approach to student development.
