What Our History Lessons Didn’t Tell Us: Stories From Southeast Asia
Southeast Asia is a vast and complex region. Although we couldn't hope to represent all of its diverse voices in a single virtual workshop, we invited attendees to join us in exploring its multifaceted history through the narratives of the session’s guest speakers. Their presentations provoked us to consider what we know today against the backdrop of our distant ancestors’ lives. During and after the session, attendees were encouraged to continue exploring how to reclaim our own rich and complex cultural heritage and dignity in our classrooms and communities - not the monolithic version we find in colonial interpretations or “official accounts” in our history textbooks, but the rich and complex web of mixed origins and interpretations that we find in our everyday lives.
